Matthew matriculated at King Edward VII School in Johannesburg and first started his career as a physiotherapist, having completing a BSc(Physio) at Wits University and a year of community service at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital. He developed a keen interest in lower limb biomechanics and sporting injuries and worked with various local and international sports teams. This has given him insight into the value and scope of conservative injury management as well as the full rehabilitative team approach that is vital to the success of any surgery.
He then returned to Wits University and completed his MBBCh before moving to Cape Town for two years of internship at the GF Jooste Hospital Complex in Manenberg and one year of community service at 2 Military Hospital in Wynberg. He gained experience in general and orthopaedic surgery, working as a medical officer at Victoria and New Somerset Hospitals before joining the orthopaedic training programme at Groote Schuur and Red Cross Children’s Hospitals.
After completing a Master in Medicine in Orthopaedic Surgery and qualifying as a Fellow of the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons, he completed a travelling fellowship in Germany. He then continued at Groote Schuur Hospital with a lower limb Trauma Fellowship with Dr Graham McCollum before moving to Johannesburg for a fellowship in Foot and Ankle Reconstructive Surgery at the Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Unit under Professor Nikiforos Saragas and Dr Paulo Ferrao. During this time, he operated at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and completed various research articles.
Matthew limits his elective practice to foot and ankle surgery. He is interested in research and continues to publish. He believes in a focused, integrated approach to medicine and works closely with physiotherapists, chiropractors, biokineticists, orthotists and podiatrists.
Matthew is happily married with 3 children and enjoys of variety of sports and outdoor activities.
